The Navy fired the commanding officer of destroyer USS Mason on Friday, announcing the decision February 13, 2026. Here’s what happened.
1) The Commander Was Removed for Loss of Confidence
Capt. Chavius Lewis was relieved of command by Rear Adm. Alexis Walker, the commander of Carrier Strike Group 10. Walker cited “a loss of confidence in Lewis’ ability to command,” according to the Navy’s statement.
2) He’d Been in Charge Since 2024
Lewis assumed command of USS Mason in 2024. The Navy did not provide additional details about what led to his removal.
3) He’s Been Reassigned to a Different Position
Lewis was temporarily reassigned to Naval Surface Group Southeast following his relief, the Navy announced.
4) A New Captain Is Now in Charge
Capt. Kevin Hoffman will serve as Mason’s interim commanding officer, the Navy said.
5) The Ship’s Deployment Plans Aren’t Changing
Mason is currently participating in the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercise, a predeployment workup. The destroyer is homeported in Mayport, Florida, and assigned to U.S. 2nd Fleet. The Navy said the relief does not impact the ship’s mission or schedule.

What to watch next: USS Mason continues training exercises under Hoffman’s interim command as the crew prepares for deployment certification.
