Not to process grief, not as ritual, just because it’s a room full of things that smell like a life I loved and I find that I like being in it for an hour sometimes on a Sunday afternoon. Arthur would have called this “sentimental.” He would have said it while also secretly being the most sentimental person I have ever known.
The forty-seven notes. I’m rationing them — one, sometimes two a month. Thirty-one left as of this writing. I figure at this pace I have another two and a half years before I reach the end, and then I plan to start from the beginning.
There is a line in note number twenty-three — written on a Tuesday, because he dated everything, that careful man — that I return to regularly. He was working through some ordinary disagreement we’d had, something I can’t even remember now, and near the end he wrote:
The thing about Elena is that she makes me want to be the version of myself I intended. Not the performed version — the actual one. She doesn’t demand it. She just exists in a way that makes the lower version of me seem, honestly, embarrassing. I don’t know if she knows she does that. I should probably tell her.
He did not tell me. He tucked the note in a box and left it in a storage unit for me to find after he was gone.
That is so completely, perfectly, entirely Arthur James Hartwell.
The house smells like cedar again. I bought sachets. I’m not apologizing for it.
The roses in the flowerbed — the ones the trash bags crushed — grew back in May. Knockout roses are vigorous that way. You can crush them flat in November and they come back in May like nothing happened, like the whole winter was just a bad dream they’ve already moved on from.
I think about that sometimes.
If you are sitting in a moment that feels like the last one — on a cold porch, in the rain, watching the door close on the life you built — I need to tell you something that I couldn’t have accepted the day it happened but know completely now:
Arthur didn’t build that velvet box for a woman who deserved punishment.
He built it for a woman who deserved protection.
And sometimes the proof that you were always worth fighting for doesn’t arrive on your timeline. It arrives in the freezing rain in a man’s steady hands while you’re sitting in the mud believing it’s over.
It arrives in a letter written by someone who loved you enough to carry the hardest weight alone so you wouldn’t have to.
It arrives in forty-seven notes tucked in a box, waiting.
It arrives.
