The Manchester Orchestra Drummer Who Held the Band’s Universe Together Has Died

Tim Very wasn’t just keeping the beat for Manchester Orchestra—according to his bandmates, “his humor and energy were the very foundation that held together the entire MO universe”.

The 42-year-old drummer died suddenly, the Atlanta-based rock band announced Saturday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Very joined Manchester Orchestra in 2011, stepping in after drummer Jeremiah Edmond’s departure. For 14 years, he anchored the group through a period of major commercial breakthroughs, including their 2017 single “The Gold” hitting number one on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs chart.

But the band’s emotional tribute reveals how Very’s role extended far beyond his technical skill. “Tim was instantly likable and interacted with everyone he met with kindness and warmth,” the statement read. “His laugh was infectious and he immediately made people feel invited and encouraged.”

The statement emphasized Very’s devotion to his family above all else. “You’d be pressed to find a more joyful dad,” bandmates wrote. “The only thing that Tim loved more than creating music was being with his family”.

Very also maintained a YouTube channel showcasing drumming content and creative projects outside his work with the band. Manchester Orchestra, despite being named after the English city, was established in Atlanta and hosts the annual festival The Stuffing.
